Janice Turek: "People want this annexation? Take a poll. It isn't about
wanting to live out in Spring Brook. Statements like Mr Finns' are inflamatory
because they push the need to talk about this and get informed under the table.
. "
To paraphrase Ms Forts question that I was responding to: Why arent more
Winonans outraged by City Halls annexation efforts?
In hindsight, my devils advocate response would have been less inflammatory
if I had used the phrase suburban lifestyle instead of Springbrook
lifestyle. Or maybe township lifestyle would have been more applicable. The
term suburbs is usually associated with larger cities than Winona.
Anyway, although I havent taken even an informal poll, I think the dream
home for many, perhaps a majority of, Winona families would be in a rural
setting that is a convenient, short drive to the golf course, Wal-Mart, and
Menards. And if theyre counting on being just a couple of job promotions or
lottery tickets away from leaving their starter home, they might feel that the
annexation will provide the necessary building site selection.
As Ive written many times before, I wish our downtown riverfront area could
be revived into a desirable location to live in or near. However, a city in
which the opening of a parking ramp is an occasion for front-page celebration is
a long ways from being receptive to non-automobile dependent urban design
concepts. Since City Hall seems determined and committed to expanding further
into the valleys, efforts should be directed towards assuring that so-called
conservation development practices are adhered to. I expect that there will be a
lot of market resistance to anything other than traditional multi-car garage
McMansions on lots large enough for the kids to ride their ATVs.
