I want
to follow up on one of John Finn's comments ("opening of a parking ramp is
occasion for celebration . . . a long ways from non-automobile dependent
urban design concepts"). I hope what John meant to
say is that a parking ramp can indeed be a step toward
pedestrian-friendly urban design. It reduces the amount of land taken up
by automobiles, meaning less pavement, parking lot, etc., bringing more
people closer together instead of being separated by more asphalt. Just as
dense urban places are the best thing for the environment, concentrating cars by
going up instead of out is a step toward good urban design. We are not
going to get rid of cars any time soon, but we can balance their impact with
more human-scale design.
