What Al is saying (bluntly) is what I have run into often in my work in many communities around the state - the contrast between urban and rural living and what the consequences are.  What many "rural" dwellers do is unwittingly bring urban expectations with them to the country and then, lo and behold, the country becomes urbanized.   It involves all the big and little things of daily living - paved roads, fire/police service, schools and school bussing, shopping, government services, polling stations, etc.

And of course most rural areas have lower taxes than the city and people want to keep it that way.  But it is obvious that is is more cost effective to provide police and fire service to 1,000 residents within a few blocks of downtown than to 1,000 residents scattered over many miles in a couple townships.  Better service or lower taxes?  Pick one and get back to us.  I envy folks living in the sparsely developed rural areas (especially in the beautiful areas around Winona) but there are choices with every choice.  Celebrate the differences.

Linda,
Help me understand, I thought you lived way out in the country intentionally.  Generally that will involve a drive to receive most services.  Perhaps you should also complain about having to drive so far to get milk and gas and to go to school or to visit a friend.  Perhaps they should all be closer to you for your convenience.  Write an editorial complaining that you are being discriminated against because you have to drive so far to get to the Conoco gas station.  Maybe they'll build one next to you.

I understand that the district wants to save money by having fewer polling places but* I would like to see more places in the country available.  Sure all the 'city' voters will have easy access to a voting place but those of us who live out here in the country will have to drive farther than normal to vote.
