[Winona Online Democracy] Indeed politics has become child's play---it seems as though they enjoy acting like Preschoolers with intelligence complexes. "I want to be first" "I'm right!" "Mommy, look what I can do." "You can't make me!" "She's pushing me..." "He stole my idea!" "They have more playdough than we have" etc etc etc I can usually be convinced to vote along party lines one way or the other. This year, I am taking every chance I get to vote out the incumbant. Without a major overhaul within all aspects of government, I'm afraid our voices have been lost amongst the bickering. Hey, at least they're still letting us vote!!.... Tania M. Schmidt PS - I would encourage everyone to keep an eye out on the situation here in Goodview. Goodview is assessing an already annexed portion of MN City (Woodhaven) for a hefty $30,400 for city sewer and water. (That is WITHOUT hook-up costs!) We have been annexed since 1981 and have paid taxes into every new subdivision popping up around Goodview (it's the neighborly thing to do and we're ok with that) However, their assessments have all been between $13,000 and $15,000 per property. Yet, The entire project cost is being assessed on this neighborhood of 49 middle class working families (and retired couples). Even the street restructure is being paid for by us--it seems Goodview is out of money. (Funny, so am I...) I know most families today would have a hard time coming up with $35,000. This project will lead into Woodhaven II, Sauers, and any other properties along Hwy 61 that might be eyed as having potential. The reason I mention this is because last week during the City Council Meeting, the City Administrator announced his resignation. This move comes after several council meetings with the public that turned up the heat on how certain pet projects were being paid for in Goodview......I can only hope the new administrator keeps the needs of all the people in mind! (I should mention that for the most part, the councilmen have been receptive and open to discussion with this neighborhood. The way government was intended.) Credit where credit is due...my mother always said!! TKS

I see it in all aspects of this City, School Board and City Council. These people are voted into office to represent the best interests of the people, not the minority or a few. I applaud anyone who stands up to these people and speaks their mind. Unfortunately, this city has tolerated nasty responses in various ways from all these parties. The rights and desires of most taxpayers are ignored. The interests and ramifications of the people the decisions affect are ignored. Anyone who dares speak out is treated just as Ruth Marg has stated. Anyone who challenges "the authorities", is chastised. I cannot tell you how many people refuse to get involved with local politics including the public schools for fear of this. The voice of the people is being smothered. Do not stop standing up for what you believe in out of fear of public attacks. If the majority stands together, we are much stronger, help each other out, it is only a matter of speaking your mind. These public officials that attack the people who speak up, shoud be thrown out of their position. They chose to be in this position to listen to what the "people" are concerned about. They should have known at times this means emotion behind the voice that is speaking. When people are passaionate, they talk passionate. Their concerns still need to be listened to in a respectful way.
