Matt,

At Indiana U, we debated this very topic in the fall of 2002. Now that
the JOB is essentially complete (APs installed), we can give you some
input. We did an RFP the requested EVERYTHING - survey through AP
install. We subsequently chose to do the survey ourselves. When all
the respondents were in, the LOWEST bid was a HUGE figure. Without
using specific numbers, I would estimate that between 1/3 and 1/2 of the
bid, in each case, was for surveying alone. We did it all with 2 guys,
and most importantly, it was NOT difficult. Being out on campus
provides significant side benefits!

Two ways to look at it - 1) if you let the third party do it, you're
gonna get flogged, and 2) if you do it, your University OWES YOU!!!

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] site survey/deployment plan software

Hi All

I was just curious what people on this list have done for site surveys.
Has
it been basically a couple access points and some laptops? Or have you
gone
ahead and hired consultants/suppliers to come in and do your site
survey?

Has anyone used any particular software to do complete campus plans? I
have
looked at Wireless Valley's LANPLanner software (uses autocad drawings
of
your buildings and site survey readings to recommend access point
placement)
briefly, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with it or
something
similar.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
