Mike,

We don't have AP-125 in the dorms, we have AP-125 on main campus.
Our dorms are still on AP-61 (I wish we had AP-125 though!).
The throughput request in the dorms is way bigger than what we were planning.

On main campus we do channel bonding at 5 Ghz not at 2.4 Ghz.
but we have 802.11n enabled (not bonding!) at 2.4 Ghz for the improved PHY layer.

just an FYI:
Recently we have had a configuration issue related to 802.11n!
Aruba (it might be the case for other vendors) doesn't support
WPA-PSK over an SSID that does HT (High Troughput).
We have one SSID across campus for our Ticketing-Scanners doing WPA-PSK!
So, connectivity was interrupted. We discovered by reading the logs (always read the logs ;-), that Aruba warned us about WEP or TKIP not supported in HT mode. WPA- PSK falls under TKIP. Heads up!

Philippe,

If you are using the AP-125 then it sounds like you are using 802.1n. Are you doing channel bonding? Is 802.1n recommended or essentially mandatory if planning a wireless-only dorm? Also, are you using the one of the enclosure options.

Are people using 802.11a or 802.11n in 5.8Ghz?

Thanks to all for the excellent advice coming in!

Mike,
We have noticed that Access-Points located in bedrooms are less
tampered with than the ones located in hall ways.
A possible compromise could be to use the access-point as a wired
port every 3rd or 4th bedroom (eg: the AP-125 from Aruba has two gig ports,
one can be used for WAN uplink the other for LAN downlink).
This would create a room assignment issue of course!

Hey Mike,

The majority of our dorms have been wireless only since 1999. The
campus decided to put up wireless back then instead of wire a drop for
each pillow. We have continued with that and now have pervasive 11n
everywhere.

For the gaming consoles, all of the modern ones have a built-in wireless adapter except for the Xbox 360, which has a separate USB one you can buy. We currently have over 200 gaming consoles setup and running over
the wireless.

I would be happy to talk to you more if you have any specific questions.

Subject: [WIRELESS-LAN] Wireless-only in residence halls

Wondering if anyone has successfully implemented a wireless-only network

in their residence halls. If so, how is it working out?

Was this a planned migration away from an "aging" wired jack
infrastructure or was it new construction? Are you doing this with
802.11n, b/g, a or "everything? Any pitfalls? Did you still leave "some"

client jacks around or were you able to go "full-blown" wireless?

We have older (Cat 3 or worse) horizontal and are starting discussions
around abandoning the wires and just installing home runs for APs.

Any fresh advice would be greatly appreciated (saw an old thread from
2005).

Regards,
Mike
