Absolutely. I believe (but don't know for sure) that the current set of combined APs, firewalls, routers, DHCP, etc etc have enough power to do it all in the AP. What's needed is the dummies guide to setting them up in the 3 or 4 typical scenarios. The other thing that's missing is mesh networking support in the AP (although see locustworld.com) but that's not surprising when mesh networking is still experimental.

I'd really like to see a debate about the current state of risks, rewards and approaches. What do we need to protect from? What can we protect from? What can we safely leave open? And all with the goal that APs routinely share bandwidth while protecting the owners.
