never mind reverting my request for help reverting my wap11 2.2...
I think I fixed my problem.
I found firmware version 2.5 for the dlink DWL900AP+ and it is hooked up.
essentially now the wap11 2.2 can support:

22 megs (44 to come supposedly)
EAP/ radius/  802.1x
256 bit wep
transmit power adjustment
advanced logging
REPEATER MODE!!
client AP mode
built in DHCP SERVER
AND:
you can use a wap11 1.0, 1.1, or 2.2 as a client!!

so far it is stable, but it's only been about 45 minutes...
that's not saying much, but considering the weekend I've had,  it counts.
