Aironet emerged from Telxon. Telxon was more focused on warehousing and logistics and included hand held terminals and such. Aironet was more basic WLAN with PC cards and bridges. When Cisco first bought Aironet, I think Telxon still owned about 25% or so of Aironet. The ownership percentage was planned to dropped a certain amount each quarter or year (I forget which).
Off the top of my head, I don't recall any specific linkage between Symbol and Telxon or Aironet, but things got a little nuts for a while back then with Intel (I think it was Intel) investing $100M in Symbol, also endorsing Proxim's HomeRF, then dumping HomeRF as Cisco bought Aironet, who was busy sluffing off Telxon's influence. Intermec gets tied in there some where. All then was really the first major period of consolidation in the WLAN business. We are somewhat in the middle of the 2 major period of consolidation, with Airspan buying Marconi's WipLL, SR Telecom buying Netro (for Angel which Netro bought from AT&T), Alvarion aquiring Innowave, Cisco buying Linksys... I expect a thrid wave to come in about another 6 months to a year, but I won't speculate on the who's.
