From what I've heard, Intel will ship a+b by the end of the year, and a/b/g in Q1 of next.
With Broadcom and Atheros in the market, they don't have much choice.
(But heck, you may be right, Atheros produces a b/g-only solution too.)
No, I don't have any experience with the products you describe. I can imagine a number of issues, but none that are show-stoppers at lower data rates.
Yes, there is no FCC-limit on rx gain, but separate rx/tx antennas mean that the reciprocity of the link is broken.
