1) Where can I find a driver, horn or whatever, to drive a large
satellite dish for the link to the valley. From the comments I take it
that 2.4/5.7 is not clear for long links. For a 10 foot dish the gains
are around 36/43 dB but will the path loss eat up the gain of 5.7?

I dont think you will need more than 24db gain for the links into the
valley.. Based on the path calcs we did earlier, it should be no
problem on doing the link on 2.4 using 24db grids on both ends at 100mw.
Regarding noise floor, I dont think it will be a problem with a tight
pattern. I have links all over the bay area now at up to 13 miles
without any issues. A good selection on antennas can be viewed at
www.electrocomm.com .. download the PDF catalog. My favorite linking
antenna is the Andrews/Conifer MAG24.. its a diecast grid with great
performance and durability. For a bombproof 5g link, check out the
redline an-50 radio.. very nice, not too expensive..

2) Any comments on the Motorola Canopy system?
www.motorola.com/canopy They are 5G self contained outdoor units 3.5 x
3.5 x 12 inches at 200mw with optional dish reflector like a Directv
dish. They claim 35 miles (all weather) at 20 Mbit with their backhaul
unit with reflector. No mention of 802.11. Looks like propriety RF
system Ethernet to Ethernet.

The canopy system is easy to setup, but it is also slow from a customer
perspective. The system has a latency of 20ms per link which I think is
too high and doesnt go over a couple of mbits for standard customer
radios. Your area has low signal noise on 2.4, and 2.4 will carry
farther than 5.8. 2.4 equipment is cheap (i.e. smartbridges).. why
bother with canopy when you can get 11mb/2ms latency links on 2.4? If
you want to go 5G, I really suggest you check out the new Alvarion 5.8
OFDM equipment.. its well built, and fast. You might even be able to use
900Mhz equipment in your area.. it could help with valley and tree
penetration.

3) I have line of sight to the hills above Berkeley and Mt. Diablo.
Any comment of connecting to BARWN. Tim?

I can provide a link if you are willing to split costs.. off list for
costs, etc..
