Fixing it for free is a really bad idea, in my opinion. $50 is very reasonable and a good price.
What if it had been some scissor happy kid that cut it and not a tree branch? Can you really tell the difference what caused the problem sometimes? I don't advise doing this stuff for free because that word gets passed around and when hear free their brain chemistry changes.
