Ardell,

Did you know that by adding a wireless card to the Actiontec gateway you can
turn the gateway into an Access Point? Might be one way to go.

As to configurations, you only need the "master computer" to configure the
gateway or Access Point one time for initial configuration. Once both are
up and running the "master computer" can be moved and becomes just another
computer on the network.

If you gateway is working, leave it alone. It most likely has a DHCP server
and will supply any device connected an IP address, gateway address and
addresses of Domain Name Servers.

On the D-Link connect a "master computer" to configure the Access Point to
receive/request an IP address from the Actiontec gateway. Turn off any DHCP
server that might be in the AP. Turn off all security, WEP, MAC filtering
and what ever else the D-Link might offer until it is working properly.
Remove the "master computers", connect the AP to a port on the gateway and
turn on the AP. The AP will request an IP address and configuration from
the gateway DHCP server.

>From a wireless computer, associate with the AP and the AP will pass through
the wireless computer's request for DHCP service to the gateway. The AP
will just be a wireless path to the gateway. The gateway will do all the
servicing of the wireless computer just as it handles computers directly
wired to it.

There is more to setting up the access point than this. At some point you
will need to add security to your network to prevent others from connecting
to the AP and accessing your computers.

Get the AP working as just a dumb wire replacement first and then add what
you feel comfortable with later.

Good luck

There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

Subject: [wirelesslan] D-Link DI-514 install problem

I am a networking amateur, but I need to set up a wireless "Hot Spot"
in my shop so I can demonstrate laptops which I have for sale and to
test repaired units.

I have DSL from Qwest, and am using their Actiontec R1524SU Gateway
router as my basic service, which works fine. However, I have not been
able to incorpoprate the DI-514 into that system, which calls for the
ethernet cable to be plugged into the master computer to configure the
Actiontec router. The DI-514 also needs a cable plugged into a computer
to configure it, so I next tried going to computer #2 and treating that
cable from the Actiontec router as the DSL input cable, but I cannot get
#2 to connect to anything except http://192.168.0.1/

Do I need to get a real DSL modem and start over with that?
