Do you use any includes, like common html snippets or anything? It occurred to me that if so, you could set/read a cookie for the userreference value in the include rather than adding it to every page.

Thanks for your help, and I don't mean to imply anything too negative about With - I think their product is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I couldn't make my living without it.--

Anyway, here are some details:

Platform, OS: Windows 2000 Server SP3 and MS-SQL 2000 database (running on a separate machine)

The settings are not default because I changed the default scope from 'request' to 'user' so that legacy code would still work

I'm not sure what you mean by user reference arguments - I'm not using the <@userreference> tag specifically, but I never needed to before and adding it into all the code that exists would be quite prohibitive.

Specifically, my problem is as follows:

I have several 'user' scope variables. They persist between pages as you'd expect most of the time. Here is a section of the debug info where you can see them:

[Application File] [176] START /ebay/survey.taf Witango_Server_5 _function=nextq A1=1 c_Scale_Boolean=0 Next_Q_id=2 Previous_Q_id=1 Submit=Next Total Length of Postargs: 62
[user$ Vars] [177] DaveNextQ=1; variableTimeout=30; Seperated_string_array=; No_Q_Left=0; MSCF=[Object: 0217FDC8]; Survey_id=172; aPrefix=<TABLE BORDER="0">; Survey_idExists=1; User_id=-3927; starting_question=1;
[If Action] [177] If_survey_has_started
[Results Action] [177] All_pages_header

Randomly (say 1 out of 20 times - so mostly it does work) when I click submit to go from one page to the next the [user$ Vars] disappear. Here's the debug code when that happens:

[Application File] [185] START /ebay/survey.taf Witango_Server_5 _function=nextq A1=1 c_Scale_Boolean=0 Next_Q_id=2 Previous_Q_id=1 Submit=Next Total Length of Postargs: 62
[If Action] [185] If_survey_has_started
[Else Action] [186] Else_innit_and_start_the_survey

Notice that the [user$ Vars] section is missing?

At this point the application fails because the variable 'survey_id' no longer exists.

If I click 'back' and click the same submit button again it will work.

The code works perfectly under Tango 2000 - this application serves about 10,000 visitors a week without issue. When I run the same application under WiTango it fails as described above. I can't find any rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes it works for 10 or 15 minutes and then fails. We're testing under IE 5.5 and 6.0 in this case - I haven't tried it under Netscape - but I really need it to work under IE.

One thing I'm trying that I thought of today is that the files are all created with the WiTango Editor version 4.5. I've opened and saved the file with the latest Editor (5.01.037) to see if there was a difference.

The .taf file is rather complicated and wouldn't work without the MS-SQL database backend, so I don't know if it's worth sending it to you, but if you'd like to see it you can. Plus, because of this problem I don't have the latest version of the server running on a public server for you to test remotely.

Anyway, thanks for your help, if you have any ideas, please let me know...

Subject: RE: Witango-Talk: WiTango Support
Hello, Dave:

I haven't followed this thread. If you'd like to post the details, directly answering all the most important questions, I'll try and take a look at it.

-- Platform, OS
-- are the settings at the default
-- are you using user reference arguments faithfully or relying on cookies
-- send me a sample of your code and a repeatable example of some in-service code, with the URL, that misbehaves and the steps to make it do so (if this is repeatable).

It is possible, for example, that you are experiencing some issue with a particular browser, if you are relying on cookies, or perhaps there is a security setting that is messing you up. Is this an Internet (uncontrolled user-base) or an Intranet (browser and version subject to corporate controls)? What browser version causes it to mis-behave? Is it the same across all browsers?

Let's give it some thought before concluding that Witango is the culprit.

If this has been discussed on the list at length, please just send me the above details in an offline note. If it's been discussed but not summarized for all to review, send it to the list.

As for Phil and Sophie, they are likely on light duties through the Christmas break, like the rest of us.

Warning: I'm actually on a bit of a break, so my responses could take a day or two.

Be well,
Ian

I'm getting worried about With Enterprises ability to perform customer support for WiTango. I've had an issue (that I'd posted to this list first) where my user variables disappear between one page and the next, randomly. I've emailed With about the issue and did get a response from Phil and Sophie offering a new patch to the server to see if the problem went away. It didn't and I replied as such. But I haven't heard anything back nor have I got a response to subsequent emails to them. As it stands, we've paid for the upgrade to the new version but I can't use it because this issue is so severe. I'm wondering if there's a better way to go about getting customer support for the product?
