You're both right, I think. I don't use VMWare's ESX Server product myself, but I believe the Remote Console is one of the methods used to interact with a particular ESX "instance" (local and/or remote), which is where the Server software is running. As I understand it, other Remote software can also be utilized with ESX.
I do use VMWare Workstation everyday though, and have never had a problem with it with regards to Witango (any version). Could it be there is something unusual about the environment configuration of the ESX instance that Witango doesn't like? Like limited amount of RAM, Network settings or Processor affinity?
