I don't really know, it does some funky things with merge modules I assume :).

 

As it is now, even running light.exe /help or so will fail. I think this may be too strict, and will confuse many users - WiX just doesn't work! - who will give up.

 

I think there are two arguments against the current behaviour:

- No helpful error message is being printed out

- Not all users require the functionality provided in mergemod.dll

 

So I think it is worth considering the requirement of mergemod.dll to be present again, or implementing it in a different way. Basically, we should reach consencus if this is a bug or is by design (and a breaking change).

If it would be deemed a bug, however, it is a serious one...

 

As well, how does Votive handle this? I didn't look into it, but I can imagine it fails in very strange ways when invoking light.exe when mergemod.dll is not present...

I don't remember having read anything about the reasons for this issue. Is this an error introduced inadvertently or is it a limitation we have to live with from now on? I know it's the manifest but couldn't that be worked around so that Light only needs Mergemod.dll when it actually uses it?

In addition, I never actually looked into it. What is this Mergemod.dll, anyway? More than some wrapper around some API functionality? If not, couldn't its functionality be reproduced directly in WiX?
