Good point, the loss of reading and the imagination is detrimental to all advanced societies. Not learning from history, dooms one to repeat it. Doing the same over and over and over again expecting a different outcome is the sign of insanity. Populace = too stupid. To be honest, in many ways we've been dumbing down awfully quickly since the advent of television (it tells us things and we watch, so little reason to think, which even radio managed to activiate somewhat). I think media as it is has a fair amount to do with it. But it may also just be how the most powerful cultures/empires tend to evolve.
