Good point, the loss of reading and the imagination is detrimental to all
advanced societies.  Not learning from history, dooms one to repeat it.  Doing
the same over and over and over again expecting a different outcome is the sign
of insanity.  Or so I've heard.

America historically has freedom of speech, especially if no one is really
listening to you.

You know, really, it comes down to people getting the media they deserve, just

The first comment on that page I linked to was from a woman who said that she
gets everything she needs from CNN or MSNBC or Fox News, and all she was
missing was a local weather ticker.  Well, if our people have so abdicated
their role as citizens that they don't believe they need to know what's going
on in the community where they live.. then it doesn't matter what newspapers or
television stations try.  Populace = too stupid.

To be honest, in many ways we've been dumbing down awfully quickly since the
advent of television (it tells us things and we watch, so little reason to
think, which even radio managed to activiate somewhat). I think media as it is
has a fair amount to do with it. But it may also just be how the most powerful
cultures/empires tend to evolve. It's not too much different than Romans of
circa 2 millenia ago wanting their diversions and blood, except they didn't
have digital nor nearly all the options and 'fun' we've created.
