MSNBC's Olbermann to Return Tuesday By SAM SCHECHNER MSNBC said late Sunday it would reinstate Keith Olbermann to its lineup on Tuesday, four days after it suspended the liberal TV host because he had given money to three Democratic candidates in the 2010 midterm elections.
The General Electric Co. network had originally suspended Mr. Olbermann-one of its biggest stars-indefinitely, without pay, citing NBC News policies against political donations. But in a statement, network President Phil Griffin said he had "determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night's program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy." He added: "We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night." A representative for Mr. Olbermann didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Discussions to return Mr. Olbermann continued through the weekend, according to a person familiar with the matter. MSNBC wanted Mr. Olbermann to apologize for making a mistake, while Mr. Olbermann contended that an open-ended suspension was inappropriate, the person said. Mr. Olbermann broke his public silence on the imbroglio Sunday afternoon via his Twitter Inc. account. "Greetings From Exile! A quick, overwhelmed, stunned THANK YOU for support that feels like a global hug & obviously left me tweetless XO," he wrote. On Oct. 28, Mr. Olbermann gave $2,400 to each of two Democratic congressional representatives from Arizona, Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords, as well as $2,400 to failed U.S. Senate candidate from Kentucky Jack Conway, according to Federal Election Commission records. Mr. Olbermann had regularly taken Fox News to task over political donations by parent News Corp., including a $1 million donation to the Republican Governors Association. News Corp. said its donation to the Republican Governors supports "our priorities at this most critical time for our economy," a News Corp. spokesman said in an email statement Friday. News Corp. also owns the Wall Street Journal. Write to Sam Schechner at [email protected] Regards, KGB ----- Kevin G.
