Rob, I too, am evaluating ws_ftp pro. What you may need is the "exclude" feature. It's one of the fields you can fill in on the quick sync window. This should, as I understand it, cause ws-ftp pro to skip any updates of the excluded folders. It may still scan the folders however, I'm not sure.
The feature is mentioned in the help section (help is not much help however) and again in a couple of places in the Ipswitch knowledge base. The real problem is that this feature does not work correctly. I've had several exchanges with Ipswitch and they are aware of the problem and are supposedly working on it. What happens for me is that if you exclude a folder on the remote site, ws_ftp pro treats it like it's empty and transfers all the files in the corresponding local folder to the remote folder, even if those in the remote folder are the same or newer. It just ignores the fact that there are files in the excluded folder. If they get the feature working it would be useful but not as it is now. I haven't found another FTP program that has this feature so I'm waiting and looking.
