Beta5 and RC1 have been rock-solid on my systems (WinXP). And, as far as I understand, RC1 is fairly feature complete (with regards to its rendering engine), unless some major howlers are reported in the next few weeks. From experience, the majority of instability / weird behaviour in these situations comes from reuse of an old profile...when jumping to a major new version, I'd always advise to start with a completely fresh profile to avoid any incompatibilities.
