Thanks for your latest commit, r3674. After looking it over quickly, I
suggest that for v1.3 we stick with the short Section 3.4 already
present in r3673:

For the next release (v1.4?) we can add a sentence "Detailed compilation
instructions for common platforms are presented in XXX."
Then, we'd have a separate document (somewhat like your
quick-reference.html ?) with those instructions.
I think compiling details don't really belong in the User's Guide. They
will be irrelevant for most users, and frightening(!) to some.
