It is conceivable that he single driver level control is a combination of switched attenuators before the ADC and digital level adjustments after the ADC. Looking at the X7 manual it seems that their is a simple software switch between mic in and line in so I would guess that inserts a 20dB boost before the ADC when mic is selected, this is fairly standard for sound cards.
