That seems pretty straight forward to me except the last bit "sound levels in OS", that is not a good idea and adjusting the slider in WSJT-X is sufficient. If you need to attenuate with the o/s level control then you are better off adjusting the rig RF gain or installing a pad in the audio line before the sound card.
A typical cases are those with Icom rigs as Icom have a fixed rear panel audio level which is normally a little higher that desirable (better too high than too low since you have the RF gain and front end attenuators available to reduce signals), the end result is that the WSJT-X slider needs to be at around the 2nd or 3rd tick from the bottom to achieve the 30-40 dB thermometer level on quiet band noise. This small excess is not a serious problem. My sound card, like the SignaLink, has a level control which I use to attenuate the source to get the correct level into the ADC. Personally my Icom which I run with the rig AGC on and it works well for me but I am in a noisy urban RF environment so I doubt I need as much as 60dB headroom. I have tried using AGC off and RF gain adjustments but due to having several aerials with very different characteristics I find the rig AGC achieves a very workable compromise. 73 Bill G4WJS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Site24x7 APM Insight: Get Deep Visibility into Application Performance APM + Mobile APM + RUM: Monitor 3 App instances at just $35/Month Monitor end-to-end web transactions and take corrective actions now Troubleshoot faster and improve end-user experience.
