The downside to this is that the version of the running WSJT-X instance is no longer available to third party applications. When I receive support emails for JTAlert and note that the user is running a dev version of WSJT-X that will often influence my response or the ability to diagnose the reported issue. There have been numerous occasions where a user was reporting a problem that I was able to quickly dismiss because it was apparent they were running a dev or a user-compiled dirty version of WSJT-X. If the version is removed permanently, then there should be a way to programmatically determine the version number, perhaps in a UDP status message.
