The good news is, that, if I select Rig: Yaesu FT-857, instead of
Yaesu FT-897, I again have proper control of the radio.
This is the case on both the Pi and MacBook Pro. Same serial and audio
interface cabling.

Hi Chuck,
that's disappointing, I though the Hamlib regressions had been dealt
with. Fortunately the FT-857 and FT-897 are identical from the CAT
control perspective, so carry on using that model. Clearly some
difference has crept into Hamlib for one and not the other.
