that algorithm uses hard-decision metrics to detect received bits, as
such it is not really comparable with the soft-decision metrics used in
the OSD decoders used in WSJT-X. Having said that, I am reliably
informed by Steve, K9AN, that a follow up paper from the same authors,
as yet unpublished, will adapt the algorithm for soft-decision metrics.
The main advantage of the GRAND algorithm is speed, flexibility and
generality, we suspect that means that ultimate sensitivity is not
necessarily one of its primary goals.
