Mike, A number of radios have limited frequency response when used in Data mode compared to USB mode.
My own Elecraft KX3 rolls off starting at about 400 Hz when used in Data mode. With the right settings in USB mode, the low end stretches down to closer to 100 Hz. I’ve measured this, and could demonstrate it if you need proof. Perhaps there is a setting in Data mode that gets around this, but I sure haven’t found it. Using Data mode for FT8 would be soooooo much better operationally, but alas… I bet other radios have this or similar problems. Yeah, there are very effective tricks to get around this. In Fox and Hound DXpedition mode, Hounds can work around the problem by offsetting the VFO from the nominal Fox bands. Foxes can set their TX Freq to something higher than the default 300 Hz so that they can hear Hounds giving their reports. There’s workarounds for all the problems. But, I bet that only a small percentage of the WSJT-X users who focus on FT8 and FT4 operation on HF bands even are aware of these little details. So, that kinda ends up like this: “The patient says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." The doctor says, "Then don't do that!” ― Henny Youngman Might not be ideal.
