Hi Ev,

Recording mp3 files and needing a SSB capable transmitter seems overly
complicated for a beacon.

Have you considered something like this?

rfzero.net

2m AB5N/b in AR has been running one of these for a few years now. It
alternates between CW, carrier and FT8 every minute.
