Yep.  And if you look at /proc/cpuinfo and see the "lm" flag your
processor is capable of 64-bit.  I already checked this P4 to see if
it could.  No "lm" flag.  :-(

I had to really hunt for that 32-bit/64-bit flag.

I gotta answer this. I would be called a traitor by all my friends in Rio Rancho, NM where the Intel plant is located, if I went with AMD. ;-)

Actually, I think AMD and Intel processors are very much compatible with one another as far as software goes. For a while, I ran an AMD computer, and it was much faster than the Intel version with the same speed. Not so sure now though. I did order an Intel MB this time around.
