- you have 3 xCAT network definitions

- the domain and nameservers values are set in the network defs.

- the xCAT site definition has the "forwarders" value set to the list of all DNS name servers you are using.

- the host name on the external net is contained in the /etc/hosts file
Some IP addresses of external hosts are in /etc/hosts - if I remove them, the behaviour stays the same.
Are the nodes on the external network defined as xCAT nodes?
No.
Did the named.conf entry look correct?
Yes - only the one zone for the external network should not be there.
Were all the forwarders listed at the beginning of the file?
Yes, they are.
The second way would be to remove the xCAT network definition for the external network. The makedns code should skip hostname/IP if there is no correspnding xCAT network definition that this ip would belong to.
Then the DHCP configuration would be incomplete (i.e. option domain-search).
