do you need the domain of your external network to be listed in the search 
path(i.e. /etc/resolv.conf) on your compute nodes? If you removed the 
external zone from /etc/named.conf, you would not make name resolution for 
external domain work, right?

Some IP addresses of external hosts are in /etc/hosts - if I remove 
them, the behaviour stays the same.

Yes - only the one zone for the external network should not be there.
