It turns out the installation-progress UI for the App Store is in … the Launchpad app. (That thing that imitates the iOS desktop, with the grid of big app icons. Which you probably removed from your Dock a few minutes after installing Lion or whichever OS introduced it, and then forgot about.) Anyway, if you have Launchpad in your Dock, its icon will show a progress bar overlay when apps are being downloaded/installed. And if you open Launchpad, it will show a progress bar over the app icon. Launchpad is in /Applications, so you can just drag it into your Dock while you’re trying to upgrade Xcode and then remove it afterwards… —Jens
