You can copy the installer app using the Finder. It’s in the Applications 
folder, just like any other app the MAS app downloads.

If the installer app launches after the download, you can quit it.

This is, possibly and without hyperbole, the worst app Apple has ever produced. 
I can’t think of any other app that lies to the user so shamelessly about what 
it’s doing. I don’t want to be the apologist for the MAS app, but OTOH I think 
the “Don’t ever use it for Xcode” meme is too unnuanced to pass without comment.
