Remember to consider the non touch screen interfaces. Tabs lend themselves very nicely to mouse/touch screen, but no so much just arrows and enter key. Even on my pocket PC I don't use the touch screen in flight because I have a little bluetooth buttons which are easier to reach.
I guess you could make the tabs like buttons, ie. just arrow through them ?
