Holy Moly but this thread grew legs! I've replied to Steve off list as he's a US guy, but just for the record, Section 6.7 of the US comp rules cover this. The only place we allow software based logging for scoring purposes is in US Sports Class Regionals. Software is approved on case by case basis and XCSoar is approved. In certain other cases, a log from XCSoar may be acceptable as a backup in case of a primary logger failure (and in certain other cases, it absolutely isn't). Read the rules for your comp and class, please.
That said, my experience -- mostly watching others curse in this case -- is that using a software logger is vastly more likely to lead to problems than use of a dedicated flight recorder. A US guy just starting out on a budget might want to use XCS for the first comp season provided he's had a chance to develop confidence in and facility with XCS. But bear in mind that XCS 6 is still pretty new! I was pretty close to buying an LX Nano for backup purposes (my primary is C-302), but then PowerFlarm announced that they were incorporating an igc (through diamonds) logger and as I've been on the PF wait list since last July I thought I was taken care of for 2011 season. Well, maybe by the *end* of the 2011 season.... -Evan Ludeman / T8 On 3/28/2011 5:56 PM, Steve Freeman wrote: > I am considering flying in my first US regional contest this summer.
