you are welcome to prefer mailing lists to web forum - that's your choise. 
Maybe many other users will do the same.
But on the other hand, for example I prefer web forums. And maybe many other 
users will do the same.

Nobody is forcing you to use the forum - I suppose that mailing-list will be 
still working as well...

Yes, if you subsribe to that particular forum. You can subscribe to all 
"top-most" forums, and you will be notified about all new content on the whole 
forum.

  1) NO - if you subscribe to the whole forum, you will be able to read all the 
new content without the browser (all notification will be send to you via email)
  2) NO - you can subscribe the ATOM feeds from the forum, so you can read 
content via your favorite RSS/ATOM reader - so you don't need browser either
  3) YES - when you will want to add some reply, then YES, you will need the 
browser.
