Well, so the colouring scheme says red must only be used for warnings, which is 
kind of logical and sure worth some effort to implement in order to create a 
consistent GUI. It does not say, though, that the logger icon must be red, does 
it? If I read that right, a non-red logger icon would not be any issue, then? 
That means my proposed solution would still work, or also using a green logger 
icon for "recording status OK", and a grey one for logger not active would, 
leaving its position as is? 

I do personally like to have a permanent status display of such important 
functions as GPS and logger status, tough if I should decide which info box to 
sacrifice for it, I would probably create an additional page with "further 
gauges" so I could look it up when in doubt, but keep all the other info boxes 
as needed for the flight phase the pages were set up for. That would lead to 
more interaction (not desirable) or to a situation where the stauts was just 
neglected all flight long (also not desirable).
