Another data point for the mga maintainer: I just received an email from somebody perusing the Debian bug lists, who suggested that I drop my resolution to 1280x960. Yesterday, I dropped it to 1024x768; the email nudged me into trying the server without mga_hal. It worked. So it looks like the bug is being tickled at 1280x1024 (and possibly higher?) resolutions; 1024x768 works just fine and dandy.
