Thanks for that.

I downloaded the binaries: Linux-ix86-glibc22 (which is probably my first
mistake)

I've just checked ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/binaries/ and
confusingly I see there are now

Linux-ix86-glibc21
Linux-ix86-glibc23

I guess my first question is:  Which glib do I need for Red Hat v8 (what are
the differences?)
Second question:  After installation and configuration of the glib22 files
my system starts X *BUT* all I get is a background with a little windows in
the bottom right hand
corner saying:  var log, and continuously scrolling up the screen.

I can STARTX and all appears fine, I can run xf86cfg and change the various
settings, but whereas I used to boot into the blue KDE logon screen all I
get is the above.

The logs report a missing GLIDE file, but apart from that all seems well.
