Actually I think there is a *major* issue that we must address before digging into these subjects: we have to draw a line and understand that can/should be discussed here and what should be an XAPI effort. I'd say that the whole metadata stuff should be brought to the attention of xapi-dev and the like, while Xindice should only focus on the implementation side. Same goes for security as far as architectural questions like granularity and ways to express access levels are the subject.
My opinion is that we focus on making Xindice into the best solution that we can. XML:DB stuff can come later and we obviously have significant influence over how that shapes up. Let's just focus on our implementation for now and not compromise things to fit into a more general model. The XML:DB API is a good thing, but I'm not seeing even slight interest from commercial vendors in implementing it. The effort is also completely stalled because I just don't have the energy to keep it going. I'm a bottleneck here, so if someone wants to step up and take over stewardship of it then maybe we can get more parallel progress going.
Overall what I see needing to happen is for Xindice to become truly widely deployed such that it becomes a constant thorn in the side of the commercial vendors. Once that happens the interest in supporting interoperability with Xindice will be there and the XML:DB API among other things will be the way to achieve it. We're a long way from doing this though, and we need to get the Xindice house in order first. We're really behind in a lot of functional areas. Of course the XML:DB API needs to be up to snuff for that to happen too, but Xindice needs to come first. Anyway, that's my two pennies.
What about this?
