I've noticed that my framerate drops by half (to 30fps) when I enable my
PSOne (PSX) pad using the linux gamecon.c driver. It doesn't seem to

The only thing I've seen about this is on the pyDDR page <http://www.clickass.org/~tgz/pyddr/installing.html> (which seems to be gone, but google has it cached).

"I've found that when you have a mat and you start pyDDR, using gamecon.o is dog slow. This is not an SDL, Python, or Pygame problem, it's that the PSX controller interface needs to use the CPU for timing. So, to try to remedy this problem, I made some modifications to it and I now include a DDR mat kernel module. The options are the same as gamecon.o - Don't expect this to work with anything but pyDDR. If you use ddrmat.o, the arrows on your mat will also work."

You might try <http://packages.debian.org/unstable/misc/ddrmat-source.html>
