Gamecon is dog slow. Time to do a little driver hacking:
Edit gamecon.c and find PSX_DELAY, and change it from like 120 to, say, 30. Recompile it and re-insmod the driver, or reboot if it's compiled into your kernel, and then try it. You'll experience better framerates.
That worked great. It doesn't seem to like values <5 usec. Now if I could only get DGA to not lock up my GeForce..
