Whoa!!!!

Please see the following excerpt from the UN/CEFACT TMWG's recommendations
to the Steering Committee re XML:

"4) Recasting existing EDI Directories into XML
There have been many recommendations from several organisations to develop
algorithms to auto-generate XML DTDs directly from EDI Directories. TMWG
believes
that this should not occur, but UN/CEFACT resources should focus on the
simplification
and harmonisation effort instead. Message Implementation Guidelines should
be the
source to create XML DTDs, not the EDI Directories. The fundamental reason
is that tag
names would be created that would never be used in a real life scenario,
basically a
superset of tag names. The analysis of industry and company MIGs would
provide the
core data ( or subset ) that is really used."

The URL to download full document from UN/CEFACT's site is attached

TMWG Position on XML - Recommendations to UN/CEFACT).

Also, just a quick response to the following statement in Michael's message:

|"The fact that these two standards bodies have agreed to merge into a
single
standard tells us that we are capable of coming together on issues such as
this."

This is a gross misstatement and misperception. Neither of these two
organizations have agreed to merge the existing X12 and UN/EDIFACT standards
into a single standard. What IS taking place is major work on the next
generation of EDI standards - the OO-edi standards. A full discussion how
this effort began within the X12 Committee and the results of a year-long
OO-edi Demonstration Project (which I co-managed for the X12 SITG) can be
viewed at my web site at http://www.rfa-edi.com/. From the home page just
click on the Next Generation Standardsfor EC/EDI link.
