Jim,
I guess you could distill all of the verbiage that way. It's really not a
bad approach is it?
The real focus for OO-edi is on rigorously modeled business processes using
a standard (UML) technique and methodology (which is being finalized very
soon by the UN/CEFACT TMWG group so that we have clear, succinct and
umambiguous models, other artifacts and classes which the ISVs can use to
develop solutions that will interoperate and be affordable. If you take the
time (! and it will be a bit of it!) to get the ISO IS14662 Open-EDI
Framework document you'll learn that there are two domains: The business
operational view (BOV) and the functional service view (FSV). The domain for
the OO-edi next generation standards is the BOV while the actual
technologies used implement the OO-edi standards (could be XML or something
else; most likely will be XML in the near term) is the domain of the
solution developer, whether an in-house developer or a commercial ISV,
Ultimately, we will get to distributed object computing and component
architectures.

|Rachel,
|
|Did all that just (here and now) say something like:
|
|we're starting with a clean sheet of paper, will use
|everything we have
|learned, and will not encumber our targeted functionality with
|issues of
|backward compatibility
|
|?

|P.S.
|
|I don't mind, as I scan in the tables and pipe them thru a
|(new/additional/connectable) rDb file/table, field, generator
|anyway. All I
|then have to do is create the proper indexing to then fire my
|cascading-browsers generator (it keys off "of" relationships)
|and then I
|apply can-read/write/update permissions in the data dictionary for the
|general case (it has to be customized for each site/partner
|anyway; hey! why
|didn't I automate that to(sic)? a Q&A script) to disallow user
|browsing/clobbering system/case/sequence/document/table fields
|that are for
|organization etc.; not user input.
|
|But some other people will then need clean sheets and lots of
|time and money.
| Some more than others. But it's always been like that.
|
|I suppose OO-edi really must insist on the best overall state
|of the art;
|duty huh?
