Sherry,

The 274 Healthcare Provider Record transaction set first appeared in
V4020 of the X12 standards. I've inserted below the purpose and scope
statement of this TS which should give you an idea of what it's
intended to do.m As you know, the HIPAA transactions are based on
V4010.

Rachel

"This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes
the data contents of the Healthcare Provider Information Transaction
Set (274) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange
(EDI) environment. This standard can be used to exchange demographic
and educational/professional qualifications about healthcare providers
between providers, provider networks or any other entity that
maintains or verifies healthcare provider information. Healthcare
provider information is routinely exchanged for the purpose of 1)
maintaining provider data bases for claim adjudication, provider
directories, patient referrals, and report provider information 2)
submitting an application to join a provider organization or provider
network such as a hospital, preferred provider organization (PPO) or
health maintenance organization (HMO) and 3) verifying credentials
such as educational/professional qualifications, licenses, and
malpractice coverage/history."

Hemant,

What is the 274 provider record? I am currently working on HIPAA now
and I
am not familiar with this standard. The 275 which requests additional
information is currently under construction and is not under the
current
mandate.

Hemant:

I've attached the URL below for the HIPAA Administrative
Simplification
website which provides the list of the initial set of EDI standards
mandated. As for time schedule, there is no sequencing - compliance
by all
organizations that need to comply is 24 months after the passage of
the
rule (August 17, 2000) so the deadline is October 16, 2002.
Hope this helps
Ruel

Hi Rachael and Folks ,

I have learnt a lot by reading others postings. I had some questions
on EDI
as related to HIPAA.
Pardon me if this seems very trivial.

1. I know there is a timeline for adoption of the HIPAA standards.
Is there a time line for adoption of each kind of record type.
I mean a relative priorIty of 834/835 , 270/271 etc.

2. What is the status of 274 provider record.
Are there any other provider data interchange records besides 274
in the pipeline ??

Regards,
Hemant
