Mike, et al. Mike's description of the X12/DISA relationship is accurate -- ASC X12 is the standards committee, while DISA is its secretariat. And Mike is right again when he says the DISA Registry Initiative or DRIve does not yet have X12 standards registered.
DISA also has several vertical industry affiliates that have written XML specifications and at the moment those specifications -- OpenTravel Alliance and Interactive Financial Exchange Forum to be precise -- are registered in DRIve. The vertical industry affiliates offer their specifications in electronic form and make them freely available, which are the prerequisites (along with DISA affiliation) for DRIve registration. We set aside, however, a place in DRIve for X12 standards. DISA wanted to establish an online standards/specifications registry for some time, but we also wanted a standards-based solution, and when the ebXML specifications registry specifications came along, we saw an opportunity to make it happen. Of course, having XML Global donate the software significantly accelerated the process. DRIve is a registry, not a repository. It links to the physical location of the specifications, but does not physically store them. DRIve classifies specifications according to the North American Industrial Classification Systems (NAICS) and UN Standard Product and Service Code (UNSPSC), shows the relationships among the specifications, and connects specifications to their counterpart entries in external registries. For more information about DRIve and to see DRIve for yourself, go to http://www.disa.org/drive/index.html .
