There was a group developing XML data dictionary called igML. William 
Kammerer headed it up when he was still at Foresight. The group used XML 
to define X12 and EDIFACT much like SEF.  The igML mailing list has been 
pretty quite as of late so I don't know how that project stands.

You can also check out my product from the link below.  The product has 
the EDI definitions stored in XML files.
