I will look into the java suggestion. Strangely enough, Gimp has not
crashed recently when I touch XXE. What I have been doing is touching a
terminal window first before touching XXE after using Gimp. I will keep
you posted.

Upgrade to latest Java 1.6 runtime (or, on the contrary, downgrade to
last Java 1.5 runtime). Sorry not to be able to help you more.
