Do you mean switching from egl to glx as in switching the compositing backend? And it did not work with egl backend but with glx? The egl backend on X in KWin isn't supported well at the moment and switching between them shouldn't be possible anymore from the control module in system settings. Can you post a backtrace from the dying process? Is it KWin or Plasmashell? The one of Plasmashell in the Gentoo bug report is with an AMD card.
