If you don't pass the vga parameter, there's probably no framebuffer
device at all but normal VGA console.

vesafb can't change the mode. You can only use the resolution you boot
it with. I'd expect the BIOS of a Notebook to support the native panel
resolution though, but I may be naive and spoilt. :) If it doesn't,
you'll have to get tridentfb or the XFree86 trident driver going.
